Third-Grade Reading Assessment Update from MDE

📚🎉 3RD GRADE READING ASSESSMENT FOR THE YEAR 2025 🎉📚

Hey parents and guardians! The time is fast approaching for our 3rd graders to take their big reading test. Here’s everything you need to know:

About the Test:
According to the Literacy-Based Promotion Act, all 3rd-grade public school students must pass a reading test to move on to the 4th grade. The reading section of the Mississippi Academic Assessment Program (MAAP) English Language Arts (ELA) test is what determines if they can be promoted. If your child doesn’t pass the 3rd Grade MAAP ELA test on their first try, they will have two more chances to retest.

Test Format:

  • The 3rd Grade MAAP ELA and the 3rd Grade Reading Alternative Assessment are both multiple-choice tests.
  • These tests are taken online, either on a computer or a tablet at school.
  • Students have 180 minutes (3 hours) to finish the test.

Content and Skills:

  • The tests cover the Mississippi College and Career-Readiness Standards for reading, which include foundational skills, informational text, literature, and language.

Testing Dates:

  • March 31, 2025 - April 18, 2025: 3rd Grade MAAP ELA Assessment Testing Window
  • May 5-9, 2025: 3rd Grade Reading Alternative Assessment (first retest opportunity)
  • June 16-27, 2025: 3rd Grade Reading Alternative Assessment (second retest opportunity)

Test Results:

  • You will get a student report for the reading section of the 3rd Grade MAAP ELA test by May 5, 2025. This report will let you know if your child meets the promotion requirement.
  • If your child doesn’t meet the requirement, they will take the 3rd Grade Reading Alternative Assessment between May 5-9, 2025. There will be one final chance to retest from June 16-27, 2025.

Why is this Important?
The Literacy-Based Promotion Act (2013) requires that 3rd graders show they are ready for 4th-grade reading by the end of the year. Research shows that students who are not reading at grade level by 3rd grade might have difficulty in school. Some students may qualify for an exemption, so please ask your child’s teacher about “good cause” exemptions.

Questions to Ask Your Child’s Teacher:

  • Is my child reading grade-level material fluently and comprehensively?
  • How is my child’s performance on the universal screener?
  • What can I do at home to help prepare my child for the 3rd-grade MAAP ELA test?
  • How can I support my child’s reading development at home?

Tips to Support Your Child at Home:

  • Encourage your child to read aloud.
  • Correct any missed words.
  • Help your child read words correctly.
  • Make sure your child understands by having them reread sentences.
  • Provide a quiet study area at home.
  • Set aside time for homework, studying, and daily reading.
  • Discuss your child’s progress with their teacher for tips and home support.
